Eco-Column
Laura Hambleton and John Donnelly, Herald Staff, The Miami Herald , 3/2/1991

Recycling is the answer, the prime solution.
If everyone helps, we can stop the pollution...
Do the right thing and recycling will pay.
Take the lead and start today.

So goes a rap tune sung by students at Jackson High School on a video that they hope will prompt Dade County students and teachers to recycle. Fourteen students worked on the video, which reminds students, employees and teachers in the county system that each of them throws out an average of seven pounds of trash a day.

A narrator explains how recycling works and how kids can do their part. One key bit of advice: Educate parents.

County schools are starting to do their part. Since January, the county has placed bins in most schools to recycle white paper and aluminum cans.

The recycled goods are sold; proceeds go to the school. Arise Foundation, a county environmental watchdog group, is sponsoring a contest to see which school recycles the most.

Anyone interested in receiving a copy of the video should call the Department of Energy and Recycling Programs, Dade County Schools, 995-1550, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

As the rap goes, "Help with the fight and blow solid waste out of sight."
