Sessions Teach Youths Life Skills
The Northwest Indiana and Illinois Times Newspaper,
October 4, 2007

GARY | The first in a series of classes for youths 5 to 18 years old starts Saturday.

The mentoring staff at Highly Flavored Ministry will present ARISE Life Skills from 3 to 4 p.m., with free classes starting this weekend and continuing through December at Savannah Center at Indiana University Northwest, 3400 Broadway.

Youths will be separated into four age groups, and weekly incentives, gifts and prizes will be offered throughout the training period.

The focus of the fall sessions will be drugs, alcohol and tobacco. The program is co-sponsored by the Lake County Drug Free Alliance and IUN's Phi Alpha Honor Society.

The ARISE life skills management program has helped more than 500,000 disadvantaged youths since its inception as a nonprofit organization in 1986, according to a news release. Highly Flavored Ministry has more than 15 trained ARISE instructors.

Register youths in advance by calling (219) 938-3318 or by visiting www.highlyflavoredministry.com. Walk-ins are welcome. Parental or guardian permission is required.

Highly Flavored Ministry is a nonprofit organization committed to encouraging individuals and families of those who are incarcerated, according to the release. Its mentoring component works to establish relationships with at-risk youths through one-on-one mentoring, empowerment film festivals, workshops and other activities.
