Three winners of the Country Day Poetry and Poster Contest, sponsored by the Council of Garden Club residents of Dade County, were third-grade students at Sunset Elementary School.
Britt Lake won first place in the poetry division, Andrew Gallagher won first place in the poetry division and Jonathon Thorn won second place in the poetry division. Peter Herbert, a freshman at Central High School, won first place in Information Processing Concepts at the Future Business Leaders of America District 10 Leadership Conference, held Feb. 16.
The Chamber Singers of Whispering Pines Elementary School have been invited to perform at Disney World on Thursday.
The group is composed of students in grades one through five, and performs under the direction of Ron Simon, the school's music teacher.
The students sing a variety of songs, including patriotic, pop, rock holiday songs.
They have performed in Washington, D.C., Tallahassee and at Lincoln Center in New York City.
Students from South Miami Middle School assisted the Black Archives History and Research Foundation Inc. in the celebration of Black History Month and presented assemblies in four Dade schools.
"How to Fund a College Education" will be held 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Young Adult Department of the South Dade Regional Library, 10750 SW 211th St.
Ray Chapppell, from Southern Securities, will discuss scholarships, financial aid, financing alternatives, savings programs, student’s loans and more. All ages are welcome.
Todd Lebowitz, a senior at Palmetto High School, was selected to attend the 1990 National Young Leaders Conference sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council.
Approximately 400 high school juniors and seniors from around the country were selected for this honor based on academic achievement, leadership and citizenship.
Auburndale Elementary: The school is asking that neighbors drop off aluminum cans to help in their effort to win $1,000 in the Ruvin-McAliley awards sponsored by Dade County Public Schools and Arise Foundation. The school in this region that recycles the most will win.
